Tungsten Radiation Shielding
Wolfmet tungsten alloy provides superior shielding against gamma and X-ray radiation across a wide range of medical, nuclear, and industrial applications – offering a non-toxic, space-efficient alternative to lead
SUPERIOR ATTENUATION
Wolfmet has been the first choice for engineers requiring tungsten radiation shielding for over 40 years. Its density – more than 60% higher than lead – provides superior attenuation of X-ray and gamma radiation, enabling more compact and effective shielding solutions than traditional materials can achieve.
Wolfmet’s density gives designers a significant practical advantage: shields can be made thinner and lighter than equivalent lead components while maintaining the same level of radiation protection. This is particularly valuable in space-constrained environments such as medical imaging suites, nuclear facilities, and portable shielding applications. Tungsten syringe shields, for example, can be manufactured with a significantly reduced wall thickness compared to lead equivalents, without compromising radiation protection performance.

From standard shielding components to fully bespoke designs, our engineers can specify the right tungsten alloy solution for your application and environment.

DESIGN FLEXIBILITY
Once installed, Wolfmet tungsten alloy is physically strong and dimensionally stable up to 1000°C, making it exceptionally robust and long-lasting in demanding environments. It is also easy to clean, non-toxic, and non-radioactive – eliminating the need for special handling licences or additional containment precautions required by lead.
Wolfmet tungsten alloy is fully compatible with conventional CNC machining, enabling our team to produce a wide range of precision shielding designs to exact customer specifications – from standard catalogue components to complex bespoke geometries. For designs requiring intricate internal features or unusual profiles, Wolfmet 3D printed tungsten components offer even greater manufacturing freedom.
ENGINEERING EXPERTISE AND MANUFACTURING PARTNERSHIP
Wolfmet tungsten alloy is an excellent shielding material – and the engineering team behind it brings over 40 years of manufacturing experience to every project. We work in close partnership with customers to develop bespoke tungsten radiation-shielding solutions for applications where standard off-the-shelf components do not meet the required specification.
From nuclear medicine equipment and linear accelerators to oil and gas exploration tools, cargo scanners, isotope containers, and industrial process control systems – a wide range of demanding applications benefit from the superior density and shielding performance of Wolfmet tungsten alloy.
