Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Statement
As a manufacturer of specialist materials for industry and science, CSR is an integral part of who we are and what we do. All of our employees understand the wider impact of their actions, and strive to make M&I Materials a responsible organisation.
We are a growing business, committed to expanding internationally and locally from our Manchester base, to offer long-term, full-time employment for those living in the vicinity and region.
We are an active member of several technical standard committees whose aims include, improving safety and reducing the environmental impact of products and services within industry.
M&I are proud of our strong links with a number of leading global universities, for example, we have a long-standing relationship with the University of Manchester, particularly the Electrical Engineering, Chemistry, and Material Science departments.
We invite undergraduates to undertake their placement year with us, we actively recruit apprentices from local schools and also offer work placements – enabling students from all backgrounds to gain experience in any of M&I’s operational areas. In 2012, we proudly sponsored a young local athlete at the London 2012 Paralympics.
We undertake stringent reviews of all our suppliers to ensure that they comply with the Modern Slavery Act 2015. Distributors and agents are regularly assessed on whether they engage in any activities involving slavery, corruption, or other forms of malpractice.
M&I’s selection, assessment, and approval process for suppliers is ISO 9001 accredited, as well as AS9100 accredited for Wolfmet products. Suppliers undergo a rigorous process prior to approval. For example, we assess economic, financial performance, social and environmental performance. Once a supplier is approved, regular relationship management meetings take place to ensure that our high standards are always met.
Significant investment in technical and customer support staff, along with CRM systems, has enabled us to establish and maintain long-term partnerships – exemplified by our high rate of customer satisfaction and low rate of customer complaints.
We are proud of our award-winning standards of customer service and continually strive to find new ways to deliver and implement new approaches and new products that are safe and environmentally friendly.
We fully recognise our responsibilities to the environment and are certified to ISO 14001. We continuously look at ways to improve our environmental impact and hold regular meetings to identify, monitor and implement improvements.
Our recycling policy aims to minimise the production of waste through the cultivation of a work ethic focused on waste minimisation and recycling, good purchasing practice, re-use, and economic recycling e.g, cardboard, paper, rags, and metals are segregated and sent to a licensed re-cycling centre.
In terms of energy efficiency – the installation of LED lighting, a switch-off policy for lights and monitors when not in-use, a reduction in the use of Nitrogen and the introduction of a Cycle to Work Scheme are just some examples of our positive environmental policies.
We are licensed by the Environment Agency to manufacture Midel – our range of readily biodegradable and non-hazardous ester-based transformer insulating fluids.
M&I have policies in place for Whistleblowing, Anti-Bribery and Corruption, Equal Opportunities and Health and Safety. The company employs a Health, Safety and Environment (HS&E) Manager as well as a HS&E Officer and an occupational health service is provided to all employees on-site through an Occupational Health Nurse.
Managers regularly appraise individuals that make up their team, with formal appraisals taking place annually. This ensures that development and training needs are highlighted at an individual, team, and departmental level.
The company has a stable workforce and enjoys a low level of employee turnover, due in no small part to the generous terms and conditions we offer.
